World War I Alliances (2c)
- Objective: Understand from historical perspective the purpose and effects of treaties, alliances, and international organizations that characterize today's interconnected world.
World War I had a tangle of alliances, which had started the breakout of this war.
- It all started with the assassination of Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. Austria Hungary blamed the death of their beloved ruler on Serbia, and declared that they apologized for what they had done. Serbia told them that they were not involved and that they were not going to apologize. Austria-Hungary was not happy about this so they declared war on Serbia.
- Serbia and Russia had a treaty together and when Russia saw that Austria-Hungary had declared war they started to mobilize.
- Germany and Austria-Hungary also had a treaty and Germany saw Russia's mobilization as an act of war and declared war on Russia.
- France also had a treaty with Russia so they declared war on Germany and vice-versa.
- Britain and France had an alliance and Britain also had a 75 year treaty with small and innocent Belgium; so when Germany invaded Belgium, Britain had declare war on Germany.
